Local is Lekker

Being of an age where most of our friends are tying the knot, we have been seeing quite a few romantic snapshots of honeymoons in Thailand, Mauritius and the Maldives. Unfortunately, two equally non-trigger-happy personalities and constantly either dead or dying batteries meant that my husband and I didn’t have much to show our fellow newlyweds when we returned from our own honeymoon.

And yet, in spite of the fact that we have little more to show for it than a photo of orange lichen, I confidently and happily brag about our self-planned Garden Route honeymoon to all our island-hopping peers: We had a tub big enough to swim in Stanford, three days of lounging around on our own little houseboat in Knysna, a beautifully sunny beach-day in Plettenberg Bay, a romantic private dinner followed by an open-air bath in our luxury tent in Oudtshoorn and a mist-covered hike for just the two of us in the magnificent forests surrounding Storms River. In between all of this, we also enjoyed French champagne in a warm Jacuzzi, a very lavish six-course African feast, a bubble bath with a view of the Knysna lagoon and forests, an adventure tour of the breathtaking Conga Caves and one extremely delicious Portuguese chicken at a bizarrely misplaced little Mozambican Pub we found in an alley.

True, there was no stamping our passports and our bookings required time, effort and creativity from both our sides, but I think we proved that you don’t have to leave the country for a memorable honeymoon. We experienced a unique blend of romance, luxury and adventure without breaking the bank and there was enough that was new, exciting and strange for us to still remember our honeymoon when our youth has faded. There are so many beautiful and amazing places to discover in South Africa and best of all, those of us who are not so good with cameras will always be able to go back and see them again… perhaps on a 50th anniversary or so.
