KKNK – A Magical Festival in Oudtshoorn
A wonderful Afrikaans arts and culture festival in the Karoo town of Oudtshoorn. The ABSA Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) will take place for the 19th time in Oudtshoorn in the first school holidays. The small Karoo town will be humming with people from all over the world who love arts and culture.
The KKNK has become a major event on the South African festival calendar, it is possibly South Africa’s most popular arts festival of its kind, based on the extent of the turnout across its various mix of arts and entertainment. It was also the country’s first festival with Afrikaans-speakers.
And although Oudtshoorn might seem far to travel- the ABSA KKNK is well worth the drive, there is ample beautiful Oudtshoorn accommodation to satisfy every need.
There has also been a huge increase in original works this year including 22 plays, 18 music theater and contemporary music productions, 7 classic musicals, four special compound word art programs, two crisp child theater and a high profile new dance theater production. The Rivierbuurt will be a place of leisure for families with a variety of food and music to choose from, a shopping heaven with over 400 stalls, as well as a fun park.
Besides the festival productions, festival goers can also look forward to an array of live music concerts from country to rock and electronic music at various stages.
This festival is rich in Afrikaans history and culture and although most references might not be understood by non-South Africans it is a festival that can be enjoyed by all.
