Beaufort West, Western Cape

Fittingly called the “Capital of the Karoo”, Beaufort West was established in 1818, making it the very first town to take root in the dust of the Central Karoo. As such a historic landmark, Beaufort West showcases the beautiful architecture of bygone eras and quite a few of its picturesque old buildings have been proclaimed national monuments. The old Town Hall, which was the first of its kind in South Africa, is just one of these significant edifices and together with the Dutch Reformed Mission Church and the childhood home of the South African legend Dr. Chris Barnard, it has been transformed into a museum with several interesting exhibits. In keeping with its historical significance, Beaufort West is also home to the Karoo National Park. This unique eco-reserve is not only known for its fascinating collection of fossils, reminding visitors that the Karoo is one of the richest fossil deposits in the world, but it is also significant because of its efforts to resettle species like the black rhino, buffalo and Cape mountain zebra that once roamed the plains of the Karoo in abundant herds.
