De Aar, Northern Cape

The name De Aar, which literally translates as the Artery, refers to the strong current of water that flowed beneath the farm on which the town was originally built. Nowadays De Aar is, however, marked by a flow of a different kind as farmers from all over the Karoo annually stream to what is the biggest town in the region to show their stock at the Central Karoo Show. Some of De Aar s most noteworthy attractions include San rock paintings, a working weather station and the house of pioneer feminist and famed author, Olive Schreiner, which has been transformed into a museum and restaurant.
