However I was very fortunate to meet the owners of Quaggasfontein Guest Farm on one of my visits to Colesberg. Quaggasfontein is an amazingly beautiful farm and a private game reserve which was established on 25 000 acres of pristine Karoo veldt. Quaggasfontein is situated in the heart of the Upper Karoo area, approximately some 27 km from the town of Colesberg in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The gravel road is well kept and quite accessible with a normal vehicle, as long as you do not drive too fast.

To my delight, I found the owners to be very down to earth, warm hospitable people and totally in love with their Guest farm, the nature that surrounded them, as well as the game which roams the farm. I must however warn you that a weekend might not be enough as the peace and tranquillity overwhelms you and settles in your whole being. The result being that you find you do not want to leave. While sitting under one of the large old trees in the garden with the breeze softly moving over you, the stillness of the Karoo and that of the farm Quaggasfontein captures your senses and makes you feel one with nature. This is also the ideal holiday, wedding and honeymoon destination as it is private, and has all the amenities for a lazy relaxed honeymoon or just to chill. The guest farm has ample accommodation available. It would also be the ideal “Team” building venue for companies, or small conferences. Quaggasfontein is a definite must to experience, where one is able to enjoy extensive range of fauna and flora in luxurious, relaxed and exclusive environment. The farm was aptly named as Quagga’s are an extinct species of Zebra, while the name “Quaggasfontein” means “the drinking fountain of the Quagga’s” One of these fountains is now the direct source of “aQua Crystal” mineral water being bottled on the farm and available for purchase.

Very interesting, I found that most people think that a Quagga and a Zebra are one and the same species, however that is not the case as the Quagga is a sub-specie of the Burchell’s Zebra. This was revealed through extensive DNA tests conducted as to the Origin of the “Quagga”. The Quagga however differed from the Burchell’s zebra mainly through the degree of striping. The Burchell’s Zebra has black stripes on a white background over its total body whereas the Quagga’s stripes are paler towards its hindquarters. As the inter-spaces between the stripes became progressively darker towards the Quagga`s hindquarters, the stripes and inter-spaces merged into a plain brownish colour. Taking into account the relationship with the Burchell’s Zebra, the South African Museum in Cape Town embarked upon a project to breed Burchell’s Zebras with progressively lesser stripes on their hindquarters. The researchers were hopeful that in due course the same colour pattern as the Quagga could perhaps be re-created.

At Quaggasfontein the private game reserve, wildlife and their environment are as important to the owners as to their esteemed clients and you can sense the pride they have in the animals and their environment. The owners strive vigorously to maintain this state of affairs in order that game may be viewed and photographed in their natural habitat and at close range. The animals are really stress free as they are not subject to traffic passing and are very tranquil and fairly tame, however one must always remember the necessary caution must always be taken when dealing with wild animals. At Quaggasfontein the surplus animals are sold for breeding purposes to other reserves and the gender ratio is usually two or three male animals in a parcel of ten. Consequently, a limited amount of hunting is allowed in order to reduce the numbers of those male animals where the bachelor herd sizes have become too large or to eliminate older animals – male or female – that would naturally have fallen prey to predators like lion and leopard, which no longer exist in the area. However, in keeping with their philosophy of not disturbing the environment too much, all hunting is conducted to the highest ethical standards and bow hunting or hunting with silenced firearms is the preferred method of hunting.

When driving to Cape Town or to Bloemfontein, make sure you have extra time to explore this beautiful tranquil farm, and see why the owners are so in love with Quaggasfontein. I can assure you that you will arrive as a stranger but will return as a friend. Enjoy!

Contact information for Quaggasfontein

Contact Person: Jessie De Vos

accommodation-and_specials/quaggasfontein-the-unique-soulful-experience/

Phone: (+27) 051-753-1328

Mobile: (+27) 082-771-1369

<a

For some it may be the cities with its pulsating nightlife which make them feel alive. Others find that the majestic mountains with rambling rivers, beautiful campsites close to nature, bring about the restoration they require. Personally I love the West Coast with the familiar sights and sounds of small fishing villages, people that live from the sea and that are sincere in their love for the ocean, people and their surroundings.

No matter which of the above appeals to you, the N7 Cape to Namibia route is the one that will address all your needs as you enjoy the places, each one unique in character, style and atmosphere. The secret though is to allow yourself new experiences along the route, enjoy going off the main N7 route and explore routes R27, R45, R364. All along you will find incredible places to visit and only a few are highlighted. In saying this let us start with Riebeek Kasteel, a quant village nestled among mountains and canola fields, where it seems time stood still. Further along the winding road from Malmesbury to Moorreesburg, stop off and enjoy the wines on the Swartland route all the way into Darling. A quaint town Darling, the home of renowned Pieter Dirk Uys and Evita’s Perron where you can take in a show by this very talented artist. It is also home to the Trading Post a little shop filled with all sorts of things and the best cappuccino in Darling, served by the owner who still make real Sjambok or whips as some people prefer to call them.

Further a definite stop off at Yzerfontein, where the little town follows the bay and you drive windingly along the coast to admire the beautiful white beaches. The nature reserves which lie between Yzerfontein and Langebaan make for extraordinary visits, do take a picnic basket for the day or make sure you stop off at Langebaan and enjoy fresh fish at the little restaurant to the left of Mykonos called Lekka by die see. Sit and watch the gulls as they keep Giulietta (the mermaid) company while she waits patiently for Neptune to lure her into the depths of the ocean. For the more daring of culinary delights, visit Velddrif and enjoy the bokkoms, or go diving for your own crayfish off the bay of St Helena. Enjoy the feel of the West Coast at little towns such as Paternoster, Jacobsbaai, Britannia Bay, Doringbaai, Dwarskersbos, Strandfontein to name but a few.

On route to Namibia, you pass through interesting towns such as Klawer, Vanrhynsdorp. You will not regret visiting Ratelgat, the Griekwa development trust which is approximately 30km north of Vanrhynsdorp. Arrange with the Griekwa development trust for a whole weekend where you will be catered for in Chalets or real Nama “matjies hutte”, be treated to the “Riel dans” experience the culture and traditions of the Griekwa, I assure you it will leave you humble. A word of warning though, take along enough food and drinks as the closest town is Vredendal or VanRhynsdorp.

This route is the most scenic route and a must for the traveler who would like to experience unknown, off the beaten track routes and remote places. Take time visit Clanwilliam, Citrusdal , and Piketberg when the oranges are ready to be picked, the flowers in full bloom or visit the rock art sites which will start you off on a whole new journey of discovery. Whichever route you decide to travel, always be vigilant of small animals such as small buck, tortoises, meercat as well as little monkeys along these roads, especially if you are driving at night. Life is a journey, enjoy the ride!<br

Promises of fairies in each dew drop and beady eyes searching from a top, this part of the Garden route and Knysna has a magical attraction to it.

When the city of Knysna comes to mind, I not only envision the lush green forests but also a social buzz around the city centre. This city is a year round holiday destination for travellers from around the country and around the globe. It may come as no surprise that the town was named one of the top 100 Destinations in the world, in the TripAdvisor2008 Travellers’ Choice Destination Awards.

In 1882, Knysna was named by an amalgamation of hamlets, who appeared on the lakeshore in 1825, after the Knysna River. Knysna’s port provided shelter for up to 50 ships at a time. The timber from the region was exported from this bay, from around 1787. Knysna forest railway was mostly responsible for the transport of the inland forests to the port of Knysna, from 1907 to 1949.

Another significant contributor to the development of this town was Landowner George Rex, who landed at the Cape in 1796. He is in fact considered to be the proprietor and founder of Knysna. After a few years the improvement made to the infrastructure of inland travel, made transport of timber and other goods more efficient and safer. The port was officially closed in 1954 and it is currently used mainly by pleasure craft and small commercial fishing boats.

The subtropical/warm-temperate climate of this ecoregion, makes it the ideal home to tropical trees, fynbos, the African Elephant, African leopard, Bushbuck, Blue duiker, Bush pig and other mammals. You will also find a rich variety of birds, reptiles and insects.
Knysna offers a unique collection of activities and visitors are spoilt for choice. Choices range from leisurely relaxation, high energy adventure and sporting activities to shopping, haute cuisine, Knysna oysters or downing the locally brewed bear. They can track the mysterious Knysna forest Elephant, take a ferry trip or yacht cruise, hike or cycle in the beautiful forests, walk on the beach or visit one of the gourmet restaurants. For a chance to see dolphins, whales, seals, birds, fish and shark, they can take a cruise along the dramatic and stunningly beautiful coastline. Knysna also offer a lush green, 9hole par 3 golf course.

An exclusive experience would be to take one of the township tours available. Guided by one of the locals, visitors can experience the day-to-day living of the locals and be aware of the spirit of ubuntu. The Roosterkoek kaya Restaurant will be one of the stops on the tour, where they will be welcomed by African cuisine, township hospitality and 5-star food. They’ll also have the opportunity to interact with the locals through song, dance and drumming.

The city hosts the annual Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival, from the 5th till the 15th of July 2012, an event that attracts large numbers of visitors from far and wide. This 10 day annual feast, synonymous with the garden route is an ideal place and time to get to know the people of Knysna and surrounds. The festivals two main sporting events is the Knysna Forest Marathon and the Knysna cycle tour. For those not participating in these two main events, there is an array of other adventure and sports activities. But most important, off course, would be the 200 000 oysters- related events. There is an oyster-sucking competition and an Oyster &Wine Mardi Gras; an evening of oysters and wine tasting. The oyster hotspots around town is also a must see, must taste experience. A separate programme is specially organised for the children, it includes youth theatre, puppet shows, creative art workshops and a children’s cooking course.
The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras held from 26 April 2012 to 1 May 2012 is the only carnival of its kind in Africa. This annual festival is in its 12th year. It is one of the highlights on South Africa’s gay and lesbian events calendar. Gastronomica is another annual 5 day festival in September, promoting healthy eating and other green principles. The days are filled with activities and events, demonstrations of cooking, wine-tasting, photography, music, arts and crafts, exhibitions and much more.

When taking all in consideration one can only be of the opinion that Knysna reflects the finer things in life.

Accommodation for Knysna
<ul

As a Book Town, Richmond promises a variety of interesting second hand bookstores and antiquated book dealers to attract bibliophile tourists. In addition to offering culture, coffee and collectables, the town also hosts literary events and the annual “Boekbedonnerd” Festival which will have something for the whole family to enjoy.

Those who travel to Richmond might also stop at the Horse Museum, which is one of only two in the world. Here you will not only find equine-related displays, but also various other exhibits on the fascinating things of eras past.<br

With its collection of white Cape Dutch homesteads set against a background of orchards, vineyards and the breath-taking Sederberg Mountains, Clanwilliam is definitely a place to see for oneself. To get a taste of nature, one might visist the Clanwilliam Dam, one of the Western Cape’s most popular spots for watersports, or the nearby Ramskop Nature Reserve’s Wild Flower Garden. Alternatively, there is the town’s many historical buildings to take in.

Before enjoying a guided walk past these sights, tourists should, however, visit the local “veldskoen” (traditional leather shoes) factory where they might purchase a pair of comfortable “vellies” and delve into the town’s rich settler’s history appropriately attired.

Accommodation for Clanwilliam
<ul

Surrounded by picturesque mountains, the town, which lies nestled in the valley below, is an architectural work of art. Visitors should, however, not let the old-world charm of its gable-roofed buildings fool them. In spite of its old-fashioned exterior, the district of Worcester produces more wine, brandy and spirits than any other area in South Africa.

As such, tourists can alternate architectural sightseeing with visits to the many excellent wineries and distilleries in the area. Two additional attractions that should not be missed are the Worcester Museum, which offers visitors an intriguing glimpse into the culture and history of Worcester, and the internationally-acclaimed National Karoo Botanical Garden, which houses the biggest collection of indigenous succulents in South Africa.<br

As such, tourists will not only find a wealth of beautiful Victorian houses, but also the last remaining Art Deco Cinema in South Africa and one of only three regional museums.

Fans of that most traditional of South African pastimes, Rugby, will additionally find much to admire in the Mannetjies Roux’s private collection of Rugby Memorabilia and photos. Chances are good that the tourists who stop to see such a display are the same ones travelling to one of the many game farms that offer hunting packages in the area. If this is indeed the case, then the Victoria Trading Post that houses this collection serves as perfect place to stock up the customary weekend reserves.

Accommodation for Victoria West
<ul
