Things to do in the Breede River Valley
The Breede River Valley is known for being the biggest fruit and wine producing valley in the Western Cape, as well as South Africa’s leading racehorse breeding area.
When looking for things to do in the Breede River Valley there are so many options to choose from. But here are a few to inspire you.
Firstly Fairhills Craft and Coffee Shop in Rawsonville is a great little place to stop at and enjoy some great coffee and warm muffins in a cosy setting.
Next there is the KWV House of Brandy in Worcester, where you can take a short tour through the cellar and experience a delicious brandy tasting. Cellar Tours -Mondays to Fridays at 10:00 and 14:00. German tours and Saturday tours can be arranged in advance by calling +27 (0)23 342 0255. A Brandy and chocolate pairing is also available (and tasty!).
Now although this happens only once a year The Wacky Wine Weekend must be included as this weekend includes four festive days, with each day boasting its unique signature wine theme, to cater for all palates. Whether you enjoy just a bit of fun, are a novice or a wine connoisseur, there is something for everyone. Enjoy wine tastings, wine and food-pairings and educational wine presentations. This year it will be held from the 6th of June until the 9th of June 2013. Wineries involved in this weekend are from the surrounding towns of Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor and Robertson.
At the heart of the Hex River Valley lies De Doorns where tourists can take a journey on the Hexpas Express Ecotrek, a train ride that takes guests on a historical awakening of the area. A definite activity to do in De Doorns.
At Avalon Springs in Montagu, visitors can enjoy natural hot spring pools flowing naturally from a fissure in the rock face, in a cavern some 5 metres underground. There is also wonderful entertainment for the kids and for the adults. Definitely worth a visit.
With more than 50 different wine estates in the Breede River Valley, there are plenty opportunities to do wine tours and tastings. Some wine estates to visit include, Arabella Wine Estate, Ashton Kelder Wine Estate, Bon Courage, Springfield Wine Estate and The House of Krone at Twee Jonge Gezellen.
Spend a week slowly driving through the different towns and farms that make up the Breede River Valley and experience this beautiful part of the Western Cape.
